How to Distinguish a Diamond from a Fianite: Ways to Check

How to distinguish a diamond from a fianite: several ways to check

Everyone knows that fianite is much more affordable than wholesale diamonds in terms of price. But often these stones are difficult to distinguish if you are not an expert, although fianites are artificial zircons. Their refractive indices are close to diamonds, which are called diamonds after the cutting process. The name "Fianit" is given to zircons by the name of their place of origin, or rather, receiving. The physical Institute of the Academy of Sciences has produced stones very similar to diamonds. How can I tell a diamond from a fianite?

How to Distinguish a Diamond from a Fianite: Several Ways to Check

Ways not to confuse a diamond with a fianite

Fianites are good at passing light rays through themselves, while diamonds, on the contrary. Therefore, to find out what kind of stone you are holding, if possible, try to look through it at some image, for example, try to read the printed text. If the diamond is real, then nothing will be visible, except for a sparkling point. And if the text is read through a stone, it is a fianite.
You can check the authenticity of the stones by breathing on them. If the stones are misted, it is a cubic zirconia, not diamonds.
The second thermal method of checking will be when the stone is in the hands of a person for some time. If at the end of time the stone will still be cool, then it is real, that is, a diamond. If the stone has become warm, that is, it has taken the temperature of the environment in which it is located, then it belongs to fianites.

  • One of the visual ways to recognize the authenticity of diamonds is to look carefully at the cut of the stones. Fianites don't have the sharp edges of diamonds.
  • Also, looking closely at the stones, you can find any flaw, irregularity. It may seem surprising, but real diamonds are not perfect. Fianites are always smooth, even, and diamonds, if they are closely examined, may show small defects.
  • There is still a verification method that can be debated. But, nevertheless, it is worth a try. You need to draw a diamond line on the glass. If it is visible, it is a real stone, the cubic Zirconia will not be able to leave a mark on the glass.
  • Another test trick is unlikely to be carried out in a salon or store, rather, only after coming home. So, the stone is coated with oil and tightly applied to the glass, if it is glued to the surface, it is a diamond, if not-fianite.

And if, for example, a diamond jewelry is received as a gift, only time or a specialist can confirm its authenticity. Admiring the stone, you need to look closely at it. Only fianites can fade over time, acquire scratches, since diamonds are very strong by nature and can only be scratched against each other.
If you look at a stone with a strong magnifying glass, you can notice a small inclusion in it, trace small color changes, this will indicate the authenticity of the stone. If there are no such changes with the stone, then it is either a fianite obtained artificially, or an uncut diamond.

In any case, when buying expensive jewelry with diamonds, you should request a GIA certificate of quality from the seller.
